A seamless Instagram carousel is one wide image cut into slides that line up perfectly, so people swipe across a single panorama instead of separate photos. This Instagram carousel splitter does the cutting for you: it sizes every slide exactly the way Instagram expects, shows you where each cut lands, and exports numbered files you can post in seconds.

How to split a photo for an Instagram carousel

  1. Add your photo. Drop a wide image into the splitter above, choose a file, or paste one from your clipboard. Panoramas, landscapes, group photos and wide designs work best.
  2. Choose the number of slides. The tool suggests a best fit based on your photo’s shape. You can pick anything from 2 to 20 slides.
  3. Pick a slide size. 4:5 portrait (1080 × 1350 px) takes up the most space in the feed and is the best choice for most carousels. Square, 3:4 and landscape are there too.
  4. Line up the cut. Drag the preview to move your photo and use the zoom slider to frame it. The dashed lines show exactly where each slide begins and ends.
  5. Split and download. Click Split into slides, then download all slides as a ZIP or save them one by one. On most phones you can save them straight to your gallery.

Instagram carousel sizes (2026)

Instagram carousels can hold up to 20 photos or videos. Every slide in a carousel uses the same shape, and that shape is set by the first slide, so all of your slides should be exactly the same size. The splitter always exports identical slides for this reason.

FormatSlide size (px)Aspect ratioBest for
Portrait1080 × 13504:5Most carousels. Largest size in the feed
Tall1080 × 14403:4Matches the 3:4 profile grid thumbnails
Square1080 × 10801:1Classic look, simple designs
Landscape1080 × 5661.91:1Very wide, short panoramas

Instagram displays feed images at a width of 1080 px, so exporting at that width keeps your slides sharp without wasting file size.

What size photo do you need for a seamless panorama?

For the sharpest result, your original photo should be at least as big as all of the slides placed side by side. The formula is simple: width = number of slides × 1080 px, and the height is the height of one slide.

Slides4:5 portrait1:1 square3:4 tall
22160 × 13502160 × 10802160 × 1440
33240 × 13503240 × 10803240 × 1440

55400 × 13505400 × 10805400 × 1440

1010800 × 135010800 × 108010800 × 1440

Smaller photos still work. The splitter warns you when a photo has to be enlarged, so you know before you post whether the slides might look soft. A panorama taken with a modern phone is usually wide enough for 3 to 5 portrait slides.

Fill or Fit: which should you choose?

  • Fill (no borders) covers every slide edge to edge. If your photo’s shape doesn’t match the slides, part of the top, bottom or sides is cropped. Drag the preview to decide what stays in.
  • Fit (no cropping) keeps your whole photo visible and fills the empty space with a soft blurred copy of the image, white, black or a colour you choose. It’s ideal for photos that aren’t quite wide enough or when nothing can be cut off.

How to post a seamless carousel on Instagram

  1. Open Instagram, tap + and choose Post.
  2. Turn on multi-select and tap your slides in order: slide 01 first, then 02, 03 and so on. The files are numbered so the order is easy to follow.
  3. Make sure Instagram shows the first slide in its full shape. If it shows a square crop, tap the expand icon on the preview so the original 4:5 or 3:4 size is kept.
  4. Add your caption, then share. Swipe through the post once to check that the seams line up.

7 tips for a carousel people keep swiping

  1. Make slide 1 a hook. It’s the only slide shown in the feed and on your profile grid, so give people a reason to swipe.
  2. Keep faces and text away from the cut lines. Small misalignments are most visible on eyes, letters and straight edges.
  3. Lead the eye to the right. A road, horizon, shoreline or arrow that runs across the seams pulls viewers to the next slide.
  4. Use 3 to 5 slides for panoramas. Very long carousels can feel thin unless every slide has its own detail.
  5. Choose 4:5 portrait. Taller slides take up more of the screen, which gives your panorama more impact.
  6. Mix in a detail slide. After the panorama you can add a close-up or a slide with text. Just keep it the same size.
  7. Export as JPG. Instagram re-compresses every upload, so a high-quality JPG looks the same as PNG and uploads faster.

Carousel splitter vs grid maker

A carousel splitter cuts one image into slides that sit inside a single post, so people swipe left to see the whole picture. A grid maker cuts an image into tiles that are posted as separate posts to form one big picture on your profile grid. Use a carousel when you want one post with a swipe effect, and a grid when you want to change how your whole profile looks.

Why use this Instagram carousel splitter?

  • Private by design. Your photo is processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and the tool keeps working even if your connection drops after the page loads.
  • Exact Instagram sizes. Every slide is exported at 1080 px wide in the size you choose, with all slides identical so Instagram never re-crops them.
  • Up to 20 slides. Matches Instagram’s carousel limit, with a best-fit suggestion for your photo.
  • No cropping when you don’t want it. Fit mode adds a blurred or coloured background instead of cutting your photo.
  • Fast on your phone. Download a ZIP, save each slide, or on supported phones save all slides to your gallery in one tap.
  • Free and clean. No sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many carousels you make.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Instagram carousel splitter free?

Yes. It’s completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you split.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The splitting happens inside your browser on your own device. Your photo is never sent to our server or stored anywhere.

How many slides can I make?

You can split one photo into 2 to 20 slides, which matches the maximum number of slides Instagram allows in a single carousel post.

What is the best size for a seamless Instagram carousel?

For most posts, use 4:5 portrait slides of 1080 × 1350 px. Your original photo should ideally be the number of slides × 1080 px wide and 1350 px tall, for example 3240 × 1350 px for 3 slides.

Why does Instagram crop my carousel slides?

Instagram uses the shape of the first slide for every slide in the post. If your slides are different sizes, or the first one is cropped to a square when you select it, the rest are cropped too. Export all slides at the same size and keep the first slide in its full shape when posting.

How do I post the slides in the right order?

The files are numbered (slide-01, slide-02 and so on). In Instagram, turn on multi-select and tap them in that order. Instagram shows a number on each photo so you can check the order before posting.

Will splitting reduce the quality of my photo?

No. Slides are exported at 1080 px wide as high-quality JPG or lossless PNG. If your original photo is smaller than the slides, the tool tells you before you download.

Can I use it on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. The splitter works in any modern mobile browser. After splitting, tap Save to Photos / Share to save all slides at once, or download them one by one.

What’s the difference between Fill and Fit?

Fill covers each slide edge to edge and may crop part of your photo. Fit keeps the whole photo visible and adds a blurred or coloured background around it.
