A grid post turns your Instagram profile into one big picture. This Instagram grid maker cuts your photo into equal tiles, three across, sized for the way Instagram shows profiles today, and numbers each tile so you know exactly which one to post first.
How to make an Instagram grid
- Choose your photo. Tap Choose photo or drop an image into the box above. Nothing is uploaded; the photo stays on your device.
- Pick the grid size. 3×3 makes 9 posts, 3×2 makes 6 and 3×4 makes 12. Keep 3:4 portrait selected for today’s profile grid.
- Line it up. Drag the photo and use the zoom slider until faces and text sit away from the cut lines.
- Download the tiles. Tap Make my grid, then download all tiles as a ZIP or save them straight to your phone.
- Post them in order. Upload tile #1 first, then #2, #3 and so on until the last tile.
Why the posting order matters
Instagram always adds a new post to the top left of your profile and pushes older posts along. That means the picture has to be built backwards: the bottom-right tile goes up first and the top-left tile goes up last. The numbers on each tile, and in each file name, follow this order, so you only need to post them from #1 upwards.
Post all the tiles in one go. If you post something else in between, every tile after it shifts one place and the picture breaks.
Instagram grid size in 2026
Instagram’s profile grid now shows posts as tall 3:4 rectangles instead of squares. For a seamless grid, each tile should be 3:4 too.
| Grid | Posts | Tile size (3:4) | Best photo size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3×1 | 3 | 1080 × 1440 px | 3240 × 1440 px |
| 3×2 | 6 | 1080 × 1440 px | 3240 × 2880 px |
| 3×3 | 9 | 1080 × 1440 px | 3240 × 4320 px |
| 3×4 | 12 | 1080 × 1440 px | 3240 × 5760 px |
Your photo doesn’t need to be exactly this size. The grid maker scales and crops it for you, and you choose which part is kept. A smaller photo still works but may look softer.
3:4 or 1:1 square tiles?
- 3:4 portrait (recommended): matches the current profile grid, so the picture lines up without gaps or cropped edges.
- 1:1 square: the classic grid shape. Use it only if you want square posts in the feed. On the 3:4 profile grid, Instagram trims the left and right edges of square posts, so the joins won’t be perfectly seamless.
Tips for a great grid post
- Keep faces off the lines. A cut through someone’s eyes or a word looks awkward on the profile and in the feed.
- Make each tile work alone. Followers see the tiles one by one in their feed, so a tile that’s just sky can look empty.
- Use a big image. For a 3×3 grid, a photo around 3000 px wide or more stays sharp.
- Don’t let Instagram crop the tiles. When you upload, tap the crop icon and choose the full 3:4 shape instead of the square crop.
- Pin posts carefully. Pinned posts sit at the start of your grid and shift the picture. Unpin them, or plan around them.
- Try a carousel instead. For a wide panorama that people swipe through, use the Instagram Carousel Splitter.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Instagram grid maker free?
Yes. It’s completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many grids you make.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is cut into tiles inside your browser on your own device. It is never sent to our server or stored anywhere.
What size should Instagram grid tiles be?
For today’s 3:4 profile grid, each tile should be 1080 × 1440 pixels. A 3×3 grid needs a photo of about 3240 × 4320 pixels for the sharpest result.
In what order do I post the grid tiles?
Post tile #1 first and the highest number last. Tile #1 is the bottom-right piece, because Instagram adds each new post to the top left of your profile.
Why doesn’t my grid line up on Instagram?
Usually a tile was cropped to a square while uploading, another post was added in the middle, or a pinned post is shifting the grid. Upload every tile in the full 3:4 shape, post them one after another and check your pinned posts.
Can I make a 3×3 grid on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The grid maker works in Safari and Chrome on phones. After making the grid, use Save to Photos / Share to put the tiles in your gallery, then post them from the Instagram app.
How many posts does a 3×3 grid need?
A 3×3 grid uses 9 posts. A 3×2 grid uses 6 posts and a 3×4 grid uses 12.
