Instagram only keeps stories on your profile for 24 hours, and the in-app Archive is hard to browse if you have years of stories. This Instagram old stories viewer opens the data file Instagram lets you download and shows every story you’ve ever posted in a clean grid, sorted by month and year, with one-click downloads.

How to see your old Instagram stories

  1. Download your Instagram data. Request a copy of your information from Instagram’s Accounts Center (the steps are below). Instagram sends you a ZIP file.
  2. Open it here. Drop the ZIP into the box above or tap Choose ZIP file(s). If your download came in several parts, select all of them together.
  3. Browse and download. Your stories appear grouped by month. Filter by year, photos or videos, tap any story to view it full screen and download one story, one month or everything as a ZIP.

The file is read inside your browser on your own device. Your stories are never uploaded to our server, and you never type your Instagram password into this site.

How to download your Instagram data

Instagram calls this Export your information. It takes a couple of minutes to request:

In the Instagram app

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu ☰.
  2. Tap Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
  3. Tap Export your information, then Create export.
  4. Choose your Instagram profile and Export to device.
  5. Under the information to include, select Stories (or all information). Set the date range to All time.
  6. Tap Start export and confirm with your password.

On a computer

  1. Log in at instagram.com and click More → Settings.
  2. Open Accounts Center → Your information and permissions.
  3. Click Export your information → Create export.
  4. Pick your profile and choose Export to device.
  5. Include Stories, choose All time and the highest media quality offered.
  6. Click Start export.
  • HTML or JSON? Both work with this viewer. JSON gives the exact date and time of each story; with HTML you still see the month.
  • How long does it take? Small accounts often get the file within minutes or hours. Large accounts can take days, and Instagram says it can take up to 30 days.
  • Download it in time. When it’s ready, Instagram notifies you and the file appears under Available downloads. You only have 4 days to download it.
  • Several ZIP files? Big exports are split into parts. Keep all of them and select them together here.

How to find old stories in the Instagram Archive

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu ☰.
  2. Tap Archive. If you see posts, tap the title at the top and switch to Stories archive.
  3. Scroll to find the story, then tap More (⋯) → Save to download it, or Share to post it again.

To make sure future stories are kept, go to Settings → Archiving and downloading and turn on Save story to archive.

Why some old stories are missing

  • Story archiving was turned off. Stories posted while archiving was off are not kept by Instagram.
  • You deleted the story. Deleted stories are removed from your Archive and won’t appear in new data exports.
  • Stories weren’t included in the export. Request a new export and select Stories with the date range set to All time.
  • The media is in another part. If the viewer says stories are listed but not found, add the other ZIP parts of the same export.

Can you see someone else’s old Instagram stories?

No. Once a story is 24 hours old, only the person who posted it can see it in their Archive. The only old stories you can watch from other accounts are the ones they’ve added to Highlights on their profile. Sites that promise to show anyone’s expired stories can’t actually do it, and many of them ask for your login, so avoid them.

Tips for big exports and phones

  • iPhone: save the ZIP to the Files app, then open this page in Safari and tap Choose ZIP file(s). You don’t need to unzip it. Use Save to Photos / Share in the viewer to add a story to your Photos.
  • Android: choose the ZIP straight from your Downloads folder. Downloaded stories go back to Downloads and show up in your Gallery.
  • Very large exports: a computer works best. If “Download all” is too big for one ZIP, pick a year from the menu and download one year at a time.
  • HEIC photos: some browsers can’t display HEIC images. They still download normally and open on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Instagram old stories viewer free?

Yes. It’s free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many stories you view or download.

Are my stories uploaded anywhere?

No. Your data file is opened inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to our server or stored by us.

Do I need to log in with my Instagram account?

No. You never enter your Instagram username or password here. You only use the data file that Instagram sends you.

How far back can I see my Instagram stories?

As far back as your data export goes. If story archiving was on, that’s usually every story since you joined, as long as you choose All time when requesting the export.

Can I view someone else’s old Instagram stories?

No. Expired stories are private to the person who posted them. You can only watch other people’s old stories if they added them to a highlight.

Why does the viewer say no stories were found?

Your export may not include stories, or the photos and videos may be in another ZIP part. Request a new export with Stories selected and All time as the date range, and select every part of the download together.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, choose the ZIP from your Files app or Downloads folder, and save stories straight to your phone.

Can I download all my old stories at once?

Yes. Use Download all to get every story in one ZIP, or download a single month or year if your export is very large.

Is Story Saver connected to Instagram?

No. Story Saver is an independent website and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Instagram or Meta.
