Pick a photo, choose the Instagram size you need and download it, already cropped and scaled. An Instagram image resizer is a tool that changes a picture to the exact pixel size and shape Instagram uses for posts, Stories, Reels or a profile picture, so the app doesn’t crop or blur it for you.
How to use the Instagram image resizer
To resize an image for Instagram, tap Choose photo, pick a size such as Portrait 4:5 or Story 9:16, drag the photo until the framing looks right and tap Download image. The file comes out at Instagram’s exact pixel size, ready to post from your phone or computer.
- Tap Choose photo or drop a picture into the box.
- Pick a size under Instagram size. Portrait 4:5 is selected first because it works everywhere, including ads and scheduling apps.
- Choose Crop to fill or Whole photo. Crop fills the frame; Whole photo keeps everything and adds a blurred, white, black or custom-color background.
- Drag and zoom until the important part sits where you want it. Turn on the guides to see the profile grid crop or Story safe zones.
- Tap Download image. On a phone, Save to Photos / Share puts it straight into your gallery.
What is an Instagram image resizer and how does it work?
It’s an online photo resizer and cropper with Instagram’s sizes built in. Instagram keeps photos 1080 pixels wide and only accepts certain shapes, so a photo that doesn’t fit gets cropped by the app.
This tool does that step first, on your terms. It draws your photo at the exact size you picked and saves it as a new JPG or PNG, all in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the saved file doesn’t carry the original’s metadata, such as GPS location.
Features
- Every current Instagram size, including the newer 3:4 tall portrait and the Reel cover size Instagram recommends.
- Crop to fill or Whole photo, so you can resize an image for Instagram without cropping it.
- Guides for the 3:4 profile grid crop, Story safe zones and the round profile picture.
- A warning when your photo is too small for the size you picked.
- JPG or PNG download, plus Save to Photos on phones.
Who it’s for
Anyone tired of Instagram chopping off part of their photo. For example:
- A small shop turning square product shots into 4:5 posts with a white background.
- A photographer fitting a wide landscape into a Story with a blurred backdrop instead of losing both sides.
Sizes, formats and limits
| Size in the tool | Pixels | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 | Most posts, schedulers and ads |
| Tall portrait 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 | App posts that fill the grid tile |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | Classic posts |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 | Wide photos |
| Story or Reel 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | Stories and Reels |
| Reel cover | 420 × 654 | Reel covers |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 (or 1080 × 1080 HD) | Your profile photo |
| Feed ad / Story ad | 1440 × 1800 / 1440 × 2560 | Meta ads |
Honest limits: it handles one photo at a time, and it can’t add detail to a small image, so enlarging a 600-pixel photo to 1080 looks soft. Instagram also doesn’t publish an official profile picture size; 320 × 320 is the common choice, and the HD option gives extra sharpness.
4:5 or 3:4: which should you pick?
Pick 3:4 if you post from the Instagram app and want the photo to fill your profile grid with no trimming. Pick 4:5 if you use a scheduling tool or run ads.
Instagram has accepted 3:4 photos (1080 × 1440) in the app since 2025, and the profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 tile. Meta’s publishing API, which scheduling apps use, still stops at 4:5, so a 3:4 image can fail there. Not sure? 4:5 is the safer default; just keep faces away from the far left and right edges, since the grid tile trims a little from each side.
Planning a whole profile layout? The Instagram Grid Maker cuts one photo into 3:4 tiles that line up across your grid.
This tool vs other ways to resize
| This resizer | Instagram’s own crop | Typical online tools | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact Instagram pixel sizes | Yes | A few shapes, no pixel control | Usually |
| Keep the whole photo with a background | Yes | No | Some |
| Grid, safe-zone and circle guides | Yes | No | Rarely |
| Photo stays on your device | Yes | Posted to Instagram | Some upload it |
| Account needed | No | Yes | Some ask you to sign up |
Privacy, safety and fair use
Your photo is processed on your device and never uploaded or stored, and we never ask for your Instagram username or password. The download is a fresh image without the original’s camera details or GPS location.
Only post photos you own or have permission to use. Instagram’s Terms of Use say you need the rights to what you share, so ask before using someone else’s photo and give credit.
Not working? Fixes
Most problems come from the photo file or the browser, not Instagram itself.
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| An iPhone photo won’t open | Chrome and some browsers can’t read HEIC files | Open this page in Safari, or share the photo as JPG first |
| The result looks blurry | The original is smaller than the size you picked | Use a bigger original, or a smaller size such as 4:5 |
| Instagram still crops it on my profile | The profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles | Use Tall portrait 3:4, or keep key details in the grid guide |
| Text gets covered in my Story | Instagram puts your name and reply bar over the top and bottom | Turn on Show Story safe zones and keep text inside |
| Nothing happens when I tap Download | Some in-app browsers block downloads | Open the page in Safari or Chrome, or use Save to Photos |
| The photo looks soft after posting | Instagram compresses uploads, more so on slow data | Turn on Upload at highest quality in Instagram’s settings and post on Wi-Fi |
Tips for best results
- Start with the biggest original you have. Shrinking looks clean; enlarging never adds detail.
- For a carousel, give every slide the same size, because Instagram uses the first slide’s shape for all of them. One wide panorama? The Instagram Carousel Splitter turns it into matching slides.
- Use JPG for photos and PNG for graphics with sharp text.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Instagram image resizer free?
Yes. It’s free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no Instagram login. Choose a photo, pick the size you need and download it. You can resize as many photos as you like, one at a time, on your phone or computer.
How do I resize a photo for Instagram without cropping it?
Choose Whole photo under Fit. The tool keeps your entire picture and fills the empty space with a blurred copy of the photo, white, black or a color you pick. It’s the easiest way to post a wide or tall photo without Instagram cutting anything off.
Are my photos uploaded or stored?
No. Your photo is resized inside your browser on your own device, so it never reaches our server and we don’t keep a copy. The downloaded file is a new image, which means the original’s hidden details, like GPS location, aren’t carried over.
Should I use 4:5 or 3:4 for Instagram posts?
Use 3:4 if you post straight from the Instagram app and want your photo to fill the profile grid tile. Use 4:5 for scheduling apps and ads, because Meta’s publishing tools don’t accept 3:4 yet. Both are 1080 pixels wide.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It works in Safari, Chrome and other modern browsers on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. On iPhone, Safari can open HEIC photos directly. After resizing, tap Save to Photos / Share to put the image in your camera roll, ready for the Instagram app.
Why does my Instagram profile picture get cut off?
Instagram shows profile pictures as a circle, so the corners of the square image are hidden. Pick the Profile picture size and turn on Show profile circle to see exactly what stays visible, then drag your face to the middle before downloading.
